Apple's new iPad tablet device: Kindle Killer? Yes. Compelling business tool? Perhaps not. . .

It will come as no surprise to those who know me that I have been eagerly awaiting today’s announcement of Apple’s iPad tablet device.

I followed the tweets with breathless anticipation. I watched the video as soon as it went up. I’ve thoroughly explored the iPad on Apple’s website. And I have to say, “Meh. It’s okay.”I will be the first to admit I am a rabid Apple fan. I am writing this on my relatively new MacBook Pro, while taking calls on my iPhone. I have more Macs than people in my house, and have recruited family, friends, and colleagues into the Apple camp, as well. I also have more Apple toys — iPods, iPhones, AppleTV, etc. — than I would probably ever care to admit to my wife, and have an enormous collection of (legally licensed, thank you very much) content from Apple’s iTunes and App stores.

Moreover, years ago, I was also one of the earliest adopters of the original slate-format TabletPC devices from Motion Computing. As a mobile professional, constantly traveling between client meetings, etc., the idea of having all my usual laptop apps and files combined into a single device that also allowed me to take natural handwritten meeting notes and save them electronically was very compelling. Too bad the machine was saddled with the impossibly slow and unstable Windows XP Tablet Edition OS.

Between then and now, of course, I have been a very happy Mac user. There is essentially nothing I can’t do with my MacBook Pro. Except take handwritten notes or fit it in my pocket. And so it is that I have suffered a bit of unrequited love for the notion of a truly business functional tablet device.

Sure, the iPad is a great device for those who love the iPhone, but find the iPhone too small to do all the truly useful stuff they have wanted. No question, either, that the iPad is a great device for those who want a much more portable version of most of what a laptop offers. And who doesn’t love OS X and the Mac / iPhone look and feel?

But can I say with a straight face that the iPad blows the doors off the TabletPCs of yore? Not so much. Fast? Yes. Stable? Presumably. Good user experience? Likely. But boy, oh, boy, do I think Apple missed the killer app capability that would make this thing a huge hit with the business set — pen-based, natural handwritten-note taking, and all that can go with it, like handwriting OCR, synchronized audio recording with written notes, etc.

I also think they could have added a couple more goodies — a built-in iSight camera, for instance. The world is becoming more virtual, and web-conferencing and chat continue to become more entrenched as core business communication tools. The ability to include video of my ugly mug during web conferences and chat would have been welcome (though perhaps less-so by those who would actually have to look at me). A plain-ol’ cheap cell-phone style built-in camera would have been nice, too, for snapping pics of all the usual stuff we like to quickly photograph, but especially, whiteboard meeting notes and things of that sort. Finally, if they are going to incur the expense of putting in a 3G cellular data modem, and since Bluetooth is already baked in, it would have been swell if, with the use of a Bluetooth (or even wired iPhone-style) headset, this one nifty gadget could cover all your voice needs, too — though I’m sure Skype and Vonage iPhone apps will fill that void soon enough.

So, it’s basically an overgrown iPhone. Except for one little thing. And that one little thing is the entire key to this whole big thing — iBooks. In this device, Apple has not really set out to build a better iPhone or better TabletPC. They have set out to build a better Kindle. From a hardware and OS perspective, it seems apparent they have well met that objective. But moreover, the iBooks concept opens up a whole new business area for Apple, that will not only allow them to generate huge revenue streams from book downloads, but one that also undoubtedly underwrites the surprisingly low price-points of the products in the iPad line.

It’s hard to believe that a device as capable as the iPad could launch for as little USD $499 (base model), and top out at $839 with maximum storage and unlimited 3G. But surely the anticipated revenue stream from iBooks must make this device a worthwhile loss-leader for Apple. I also suspect another way in which Apple is holding the price down is with the capacitor-count of the touchscreen — I’m sure there are plenty of capacitors to create a very pleasant and accurate experience when manipulating the device with one’s fingertips. But enough to support the precision required by pen-based handwriting apps? I suspect not.

I know, a device cannot be all things to all people. And I am sure Apple believes, and most will perceive, that an excellent balance of features, capability, and price are being offered in the iPad. I don’t really disagree. I had just hoped the iPad would do the few additional things I have on my wish list. As a business user, I would have happily paid more — $1,000 to $1,200 — to have the iPad as announced today, plus the handwriting capability. I would LOVE to be able to get by traveling around with just one, lightweight, slick, portable device like the iPad, and leave my laptop, paper notepads, and all the junk that goes with both, behind when I hit the road.

Perhaps an iPad Pro will be in the works for picky business users like me?

Anyway, will I go out and buy one of these new iPads when the come out? Probably, unless I see evidence of a “Pro” version coming down the pike within a year or so. I’m an Apple junkie, and I know myself well enough to know I won’t be able to help myself.

Continuing our seven-part blog mini-series entitled “7 Things You Need to Know About Oracle 11gR2″, Integra Senior DBA Jason Buchanan, recently one of just twelve people from around the world hand-picked by Oracle to participate in the Oracle 11gR2 final beta, offers his thoughts on the CRS to Grid transition in Oracle 11gR2:

Oracle 11g Release 2 provides a streamlined upgrade solution for the database and supportive products such as CRS and ASM. It’s important to take into consideration some of the changes in 11.2, specifically the location of where CRS and ASM binaries are located.

For the most part, upgrading the database and database binaries is much the same as upgrading previous releases – but CRS is different.

CRS isn’t really CRS anymore, either. It is now the Oracle Grid Infrastructure which is comprised of CRS and ASM, rolled into a single Oracle home. An existing CRS installation is upgraded by creating and installing to a new Grid Infrastructure home. From a migration/upgrade perspective this implies the requirement of approximately 4GB of storage for the Grid Infrastructure home. The old CRS home can eventually be archived or deleted.

The CRS to Grid upgrade procedure is streamlined and relatively worry-free – I have done this dozens of times this year and have not experienced upgrade problems except for problems that were pre-existing misconfigurations by the client. Network issues such as incorrect subnet masks, static routes, MTU size mismatch, etc. are usually caused by improper setup and not an Oracle software problem.

Ideally, the best upgrade method from 11.1 to 11.2 is in the form of a migration rather than an in-place upgrade. This is the quickest path to upgrading not only the database but the hardware, storage and OS, and a means to clean out Oracle homes with several patch levels applied.

Salesforce.com exhibits the three hallmarks of long-term success -- real functional capabilities, corporate drive, and continuous innovation. Integra's Eric Heine on how SFDC has leap-frogged Oracle / Siebel.

Okay, I gotta admit it. I am drinking the Kool-Aid here at Salesforce.com’s Dreamforce conference, and it is good. Very good. What flavor, you ask? Innovation. Mmmm. Tasty. Refreshing. And (being cloud-based) less filling.

I have spent the last 18 years in the CRM / IT consulting biz, and have watched the rise — and fall — of numerous companies and products. Some were great ideas, but ahead of their time. Others just adequate, but pushed by companies with a lot of cash and marketing savvy. And then there was Siebel, who fought its way to the top and stayed there for a long while by offering the “best available” combination of functionality, enterprise-class performance and interoperability, and configurability — not to mention vendor stability, and a very aggressive sales force and partner program. Back in the good old days, Siebel was an innovator, and it showed. Innovation was what set Siebel apart from its competitors; corporate drive was what funded the innovation.

But then Oracle bought Siebel. Now, some would regard Oracle as a company that innovates by acquisition. I’m sure Oracle would like its customers to think so. Others would say it seems more like Oracle is where innovation goes to die. At least for acquired companies. I’m not knocking Oracle — they’re a solid company that offers a very compelling “one-stop-shopping” technology footprint for the enterprise, and they still continue to do database better than anyone else on the planet, and OBIEE is the promise of Siebel Analytics made manifest. But in trying to be all things to all people, Oracle has often sucked the lifeblood out of innovative acquired companies like Siebel. And so it is that opportunity has not only knocked, but damn near kicked the door down for Salesforce.com.

Salesforce.com, in just 10 short years, has gone from completely unknown, to the unquestionable 800-pound gorilla of the CRM space. Yes, there are various ways to define market leadership, and I’m sure Oracle can still find ways to call Siebel a market leader, but let’s face it: Salesforce.com has people EXCITED. SFDC alleged on the Dreamforce website that 12,000 would be in attendance, and insiders have told me the internal stretch goal was 15,000. Well, guess what? 19,000 people attended the show this week — in this economy. The Day 1 keynote start was delayed 40 minutes just to allow the overwhelming crowds to process through check-in and get to the keynote.

SFDC is also beating Oracle left and right at the deal level. We have seen a steady stream of clients this year — large enterprise clients — jumping ship from Siebel to Oracle. Faced with the pain, time, and cost of upgrading from Siebel 7.x to Siebel 8, they are just throwing in the towel on Siebel altogether, and moving to Salesforce.com.

Why? Upgrade time, pain, and cost are certainly the drivers that make them do the due diligence of looking at non-Siebel alternative. But on its own merits, SFDC is beating Siebel on-premise, Oracle CRM On-Demand, and other CRM applications. So SFDC has achieved not just competitive parity at the enterprise level, but actual competitive superiority.

And then — and this is the entire point of this blog — on top of all that, SFDC has heaped a metric ton of INNOVATION. Application-level stuff like Sales Genius, Cloud Scheduler (like Evite for business meetings), Content Library (think Apple’s Cover Flow meets YouTube for presentations and other business docs), and Chatter (the “big” announcement of the DF09 Day 1 Keynote) that securely brings a very nice hybrid of Facebook-like and Twitter-like functionality to the enterprise, and consolidates internal human-generated, application generated, and externally-generated FB & Twitter updates into a “newsfeed” embedded in every standard SFDC object. But not just app-level stuff, also platform-level innovation, like 5-minute upgrades, a new bulk-load API, one-click deployment, Salesforce-to-Salesforce integration, and Force.com sites.

There’s more, of course, too much to list here. But the point is, Salesforce has the three key ingredients of potentially huge success, not just in the CRM market, but in the enterprise applications space overall: real functional capabilities, corporate drive, and continuous, leapfrog-style innovation. Kudos to Marc Benioff and everyone at Salesforce.com for SFDC becoming a $1.3B run-rate company, especially in this economy. But mark my words, they won’t stay small like that for long.

Do you like apples? More thoughts about SFDC’s future tomorrow. . .

As usual, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please leave a comment here or on our Facebook page.

Will Oracle buy Salesforce.com? On this opening day of Dreamforce, Integra's Eric Heine thinks the argument is more compelling than ever.

Last month, the news that Larry Ellison invited Marc Benioff to speak at Oracle’s OpenWorld Conference was enough to drive me out of the closet with my months-long speculation that Oracle may be edging toward buying Salesforce.com. At the time, I wrote an entry in this blog called “Salesforce.Oracle.com: A Look into One Man’s Crystal Ball” setting forth my beliefs that because the world is moving away from on-premise applications, and because SFDC is besting CRMOD regularly in application selections, it would make sense for Oracle to make a play for Salesforce if it wants to retain a leadership position in the CRM space.

Lately, I have been hearing rumors that Oracle is de-emphasizing development on the CRMOD platform, which tells me they are either preparing for a shift to a new platform, or are quietly giving up on the SaaS CRM space. And I don’t think the latter is Oracle’s style. . .

As I have been thinking further about this, it occurs to me that I have been looking at the world through my CRM-colored glasses (which is not unusual for me, having been in this business for much of my career!). But in noodling this around today, as I gaze out my hotel window overlooking San Francisco on this opening day of the SFDC Dreamforce conference, it struck me that there is a lot more at stake here than simple dominance of the CRM space. With SFDC’s strong emphasis on The Cloud, by buying Salesforce, in one fell swoop Oracle could not only irrefutably own the CRM space, but also take on a hugely dominant role in the SaaS applications space in general. The SFDC cloud and Force.com applications paradigm could easily become the platform upon which Oracle can deliver many or all of its applications — CRM, ERP, BI, integration, you name it — with the scalability and performance levels for which SFDC has become known.

Think I’m right? Think I’m wrong? I’m certainly willing to bet that I am one or the other of those! But I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please leave a comment here or on our Facebook page.

Also, in my original blog about this, I had posted a poll asking readers’ opinions on the fate of Siebel, CRMOD, and Salesforce.com. At the time I first posted the poll, about 50% of readers felt Oracle would buy Salesforce.com. Since then the opinions have drifted a bit — if you care to weigh in, the poll is still available on that blog entry.

Integra Senior DBA Jason Buchanan discusses the importance of proper storage planning and configuration to streamlining the Oracle 11gR2 installation process.

Continuing our seven-part blog mini-series entitled “7 Things You Need to Know About Oracle 11gR2″, Integra Senior DBA Jason Buchanan, recently one of just twelve people from around the world hand-picked by Oracle to participate in the Oracle 11gR2 final beta, offers his thoughts on how to streamline Oracle 11gR2 installation through proper storage planning and configuration:

My first thoughts about streamlining an 11gR2 install were related to initial preparation work, some basic planning ideas and similar. But reflecting upon the last 12 months of various engagements my thoughts became focused on storage. The storage infrastructure is the lifeblood of any database environment but is usually the most neglected component.

Exadata is an excellent way to thwart storage infrastructure deficiencies but it’s certainly possible to build a robust storage solution on your own. And you should do so — and it should be the best you can afford. A giant SMP system does not deliver if it waits on disk.

Every client I’ve worked with over the past three years has expressed dissatisfaction in the performance of their storage infrastructure – either the volumes were created with too few spindles, undersized overall capacity, or connected to the host with low throughput interfaces. Database upgrades are a golden opportunity to petition upper management for improved storage (secretly, they’re expecting your request anyway). Review the IO statistics for your database environments, look for interfaces, volumes, spindles and network paths that are at or exceeding 50% utilization during peak usage periods.

Oracle Enterprise Manager provides a lot of useful information about disk activity, IOPS and access patterns – this information can help you determine where to augment your storage capacity and how to provision it for optimal performance. Oracle ASM greatly reduces the overhead of managing lots of individual LUNs or volumes while providing a flexible management solution for 10 or 1,000 disks.

I realize this is preaching to the choir for many DBAs, but good storage is key to a productive business and calm work environment.

Please check back soon for Jason’s next entry in this blog series: “Understanding the CRS to Grid Transition in Oracle 11gR2″.

Also, thanks to all who joined Integra CTO Allan Edwards last Tuesday, November 3, 2009 for our webcast entitled “Safe Passage to Oracle 11g: Lessons from Recent Upgrades“. In this important webcast, Allan shared critical lessons learned during a number of recent real-world 11g upgrade projects, which we believe made the difference between success and failure. If you missed the webcast, a full recording and set of accompanying slides will be available for download from our website within a day or two. Please check our blog or Facebook page later this week for the download link.

Integra Senior DBA Jason Buchanan, recently one of just twelve people from around the world hand-picked by Oracle to participate in the Oracle 11gR2 final beta, discusses Oracle 11gR2 ASM (Automatic Storage Management).

Continuing our seven-part blog mini-series entitled “7 Things You Need to Know About Oracle 11gR2″, Integra Senior DBA Jason Buchanan, recently one of just twelve people from around the world hand-picked by Oracle to participate in the Oracle 11gR2 final beta, discusses Oracle 11gR2 ASM (Automatic Storage Management):

One of the biggest enhancements in Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (Oracle ACFS). You can now leverage the strength of your database storage infrastructure to house not only your database files but also your Oracle homes and other non-Oracle file types. ACFS greatly reduces the complexity of retrieving backups and Data Pump exports if they are stored in ACFS filesystems. Another new ASM feature is ADVM (ASM Dynamic Volume Manager) – ADVM provides the means to dynamically resize ACFS volumes on the fly without downtime.

Best of all, the high availability features of your storage infrastructure can be put to use as a destination for your Oracle binaries and other critical files. The conundrum of what to do with the interior one-third of your disk spindles can be mitigated by using this space to create an important, but lesser-used ASM diskgroup: a new diskgroup for your Oracle homes. You’ll still need to install the Grid Infrastructure binaries on local disk, but a single shared Oracle home is very easy to implement with ACFS.

The optimal way to manage ACFS is via a new Grid Infrastructure utility named “asmca” which is located in the Grid Infrastructure home directory. You must change your ORACLE_HOME (and preferably your path) to point to the Grid Infrastructure directory to use the utility. The asmca utility represents a new approach to Oracle’s Java GUIs with an updated appearance and simpler design. The tool allows you to administer all of your ASM objects and manage ADVM objects.

As a side note, non-RAC environments will not auto-start ACFS objects. You will need to write a script to start ACFS after booting, after which you can mount your ACFS volume. The command to start the ACFS driver is “acfsload start -s” – Oracle will take it from there after starting ACFS. It’s interesting that Oracle Grid Infrastructure will create init scripts for OHASD (Oracle High Availability Services Daemon) but not ACFS; however, it’s simple enough to run acfsload from a new startup script.

Oracle 11gR2 documentation is more robust than ever, and Oracle ACFS is very well documented:

http://bit.ly/11gR2ASMDocs

Please check back soon for Jason’s next entry in this blog series: “How to Streamline Your Oracle 11gR2 Installation Process”.

Also, please join Integra CTO Allan Edwards and Jason Buchananon Tuesday November 3, 2009 at 12:00 pm Eastern / 9:00 am Pacific for a live webcast entitled “Safe Passage to Oracle 11g: Lessons from Recent Upgrades“. In this important 30-minute webcast, Allan, Jason, and other Integra consultants will share critical lessons learned during a number of recent real-world 11g upgrade projects. What you learn in this webcast can make the difference between success and disaster, so please register now for the webcast at http://bit.ly/11gWebcast!

Beginning Integra’s seven-part blog mini-series entitled “7 Things You Need to Know About Oracle 11gR2“, our own Jason Buchanan, recently one of just twelve people from around the world hand-picked by Oracle to participate in the Oracle 11gR2 final beta, offers his thoughts on the all new, completely re-written 11gR2 Concept Guides. Here is what Jason had to say:

Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is Oracle’s best database release to date and while it may take a while for everyone to uncover all of its new features one of its finer points is the updates to the documentation, specifically the Oracle Database Concepts guide.

The Concepts guide has always been a wealth of solid information and to my delight it has been overhauled and improved by Lance Ashdown and Tom Kyte. Many DBAs have a shelf of books by Tom Kyte but the 11gR2 Concepts guide is the most relevant document to date for all things related to the Oracle database. And as you might expect it has working examples that you can test and try for yourself.

One of the best updates to the book is the readability and clarity of the topics. At the risk of redundancy many sections repeat, with brevity, information from previous chapters to avoid flipping back and forth through the book. The flow of the topics makes for a comfortable read and all “foundation knowledge” a DBA needs to know is in the Concepts guide. The level of technical detail is well balanced and each section has recommended “further reading” links to the more in-depth documentation.

I’m a big fan of printing the PDF documentation to a duplexing laser printer (or better yet, a color laser printer with duplexer) and then getting the printed copy “coil-bound” at Kinkos, Staples, etc. For $5 you can get your printouts bound using a spiral coil binder with a clear top sheet and black vinyl back page. No more troublesome 3-ring binder mess. The Oracle Documentation group has done an outstanding job of formatting and preparing the PDF versions of the documentation which prints to perfection.

Salesforce.com and Oracle: strange bedfellows, or more?

I have focused my career around CRM for the past 17+ years, and in that time, I have helped numerous clients adopt all aspects of CRM, in the course helping those clients implement CRM solutions from over a dozen different vendors. Consequently, I have kept my eye on the CRM vendor space as it has undergone much transformation and consolidation. And I am here today to tell you I think big changes are a-comin’.

Twelve years ago, offerings from vendors such as Aurum, Clarify, Vantive, Onyx, Pivotal, E.piphany, Silknet, Siebel and more were all vying for a leg up on the CRM market. Back then, Salesforce.com wasn’t even a twinkle in Marc Benioff’s eye. Since then, of course, a great deal of consolidation has taken place, Siebel became the 800-pound gorilla, and Salesforce.com was born. And grew up, I might add, smart, strong and handsome. Today, it is arguable that Siebel is no longer the primary primate in the CRM biz.

So what’s going on out there? From my point of view, as a CRM consulting leader, I can tell you more and more clients are coming to us looking for non-Siebel alternatives, including both existing Siebel 7.x on-premise customers daunted by the cost and complexity of upgrading to Siebel 8, as well as non-Siebel customers who choose not to consider Siebel on-premise for similar reasons. Increasingly, when these clients ask us to help them consider alternatives, a SaaS model is a requirement. For existing Siebel customers, this should be a price-attractive, no-brainer decision to move to Oracle CRM On Demand, right? Um, not so fast. . .

Most CRM technology evaluations begin with a look at a universe of eight to ten candidate vendors. Even when there is a presumptive choice among the vendors (e.g., Oracle CRMOD as a replacement for Siebel on-prem), due diligence requires companies to at least briefly consider these other leading CRM applications. When they do so, it usually doesn’t take enterprise clients long to get down to a short list of Oracle CRMOD and Salesforce.com. One would think (especially if one were an Oracle sales rep), that the vendor consistency, schema similarities, and “familiarity” of CRMOD would be sufficient to make the Oracle SaaS offering the natural choice for existing Siebel customers. Especially considering Oracle’s apparent willingness to sharpen its pencil these days to retain customers.

But a surprising number of customers — even those who want to remain in the Oracle camp — are finding themselves swayed by what has become a compelling enterprise CRM platform offered by Salesforce.com. And I mean that not only in terms of the “typical” criteria that play in SFDC’s favor, such as look & feel, ease of administration, etc., but also in terms of deeper factors like robustness of functionality, overall technical architecture, enterprise integration capabilities, security, performance, scalability, and — brace yourselves — price. Yes, even price. SFDC has lately smelled blood in the water, and has demonstrated a willingness to nearly match Oracle CRMOD’s heavily-discounted prices, in order to flip longtime Siebel / Oracle customers into the SFDC camp. These are not isolated incidents, either — we have had a steady stream of enterprise Siebel customers approaching us this year making just this choice, and I know of another major enterprise Siebel customer who is days away from dumping Siebel in favor of Salesforce.

For several months now, these data points have been aligning into enough of a market trend that, at least among friends, I have begun to speculate about the futures of Oracle, the Siebel product, and Salesforce.com. And since we’re all friends here, I’m going to share with you my take on the future of these CRM market-leading forces:

Oracle recognizes that SaaS CRM is the way of the future, and consequently, it will sunset the Siebel on-premise product, and with it, the Siebel brand name, within the next several years;

Oracle recognizes internally that CRMOD has never gotten its legs under it, and that it is losing the SaaS CRM race to Salesforce — consequently, Oracle recognizes that it must do something dramatic to change the SaaS CRM game;

Prediction: Oracle will buy Salesforce.com, and will make that platform the migration path for all current Siebel on-premise and CRMOD customers, as well as all new CRM customers — in short, Salesforce.Oracle.com will become the only serious game in town.

Now, I have been saying this quietly for some time. But the events at Oracle’s OpenWorld this week drive me to take this speculation public: Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff gave a key Executive Sponsor Session address at Oracle OpenWorld today. That’s right, folks. Marc Benioff — heretofore no public friend of Oracle or Larry Ellison — took the stage in a major forum at OpenWorld. Ostensibly, the address was about cloud computing. But let’s not kid ourselves — Oracle could have chosen from among many, many highly-qualified, high-level executives to speak about cloud computing. That Marc Benioff was invited to speak at OpenWorld in any capacity to me signals a marked shift Oracle’s perception of its position and that of Salesforce.com in the CRM market, as well in the “platform as a service” market, where Salesforce has clearly been making a play during the past year or two.

When and if my prediction about Oracle buying Salesforce.com will be realized remains to be seen. But I am sure I will not be alone in watching these two titans of the CRM industry, waiting for the day people start typing http://salesforce.oracle.com into their browsers to log into their CRM systems at the start of each work day.

These are just one man’s opinions, of course. But I’m curious to know what you think:
